Jenkins - Whelden Farmstead

The Jenkins-Whelden Farmstead at 221 Pine Street in West Barnstable is a rural farm complex whose main house dates to about 1840, built in a traditional Federal-period form by Eben Whelden; it is a three-bay, 1.5-story shingled cottage with a transom-headed entry and 6/6 sash, extended by rear ells. Also on the property is an early-18th-century house (built by Thomas Jenkins, 1666-1745, and moved to the site about 1745 by his son Ebenezer), now used as a tool shed, along with two barns and two sheds. The Jenkins family were early settlers who developed the property for farming and livestock, and the Whelden family later cultivated nearby ponds for cranberries. The farmstead is significant as a rare well-preserved farm in Barnstable and for its associations with West Barnstable's agricultural and village life, meeting National Register criteria A, B, and C as part of the Barnstable Multiple Resource Area.
