Camp meetings blending religious revival with seasonal recreation were held here annually from 1863 to 1939, and construction peaked at about 150 small Carpenter Gothic-style cottages by the mid-1880s. As one of the region's most cohesive and intact examples of the mid-19th-century camp-meeting movement, the district is significant for its distinctive architecture and its association with that religious and social phenomenon.
