The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Yarmouth Camp Ground Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This roughly 60-acre district on Cape Cod is a well-preserved Methodist camp-meeting ground and summer resort colony, established in 1863 by the Sandwich District Camp Meeting Association on a site chosen for its nearness to the Yarmouth railroad depot. Camp meetings blending religious revival with seasonal recreation were held here annually from 1863 to 1939, and construction peaked at about 150 small Carpenter Gothic-style cottages by the mid-1880s. As one of the region's most cohesive and intact examples of the mid-19th-century camp-meeting movement, the district is significant for its distinctive architecture and its association with that religious and social phenomenon.
