MassachusettsHighland House in Truro is a two-story clapboard-and-shingle building, about 32 by 92 feet, built by Isaac M. Small in 1907 within the historic Highland Light area of what is now Cape Cod National Seashore. It stands as the successor to an 1835 farmhouse, the original Highland House, that had accommodated summer visitors and where Henry David Thoreau twice stayed with the Small family during his journeys down the Cape. Isaac Small continued the guest-house tradition, adding guest cottages and incorporating one of the two oldest golf courses in the United States, dating to 1892, into the roughly 86-acre summer-visitor complex. The building is significant for its architecture and its association with commerce and early summer-visitor accommodation, representing a way of life on Cape Cod that predated the era of private summer homes; used as a restaurant as late as 1968, it now serves as a museum of the Truro Historical Society.
