History

The windmill at Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich is the Old East Mill, a wooden windmill originally built in Orleans, Massachusetts, in 1800 and later moved to the Sandwich grounds. It was extensively restored in 1999-2000 and stands among the roughly 100-acre gardens and museum collections established by Josiah K. Lilly III in 1969 on the former estate of rhododendron hybridizer Charles O. Dexter. Visitors may view the mill's interior on special open days.
