Hawley, Gideon House

The Gideon Hawley House is an asymmetrical, four-bay, 2 1/2-story late Georgian dwelling in the Santuit/Cotuit area of Barnstable, built about 1758 for the Reverend Gideon Hawley (1727-1807). A Yale-educated Connecticut native ordained in 1751, Hawley served as a missionary pastor to the Marshpee (Mashpee) Indians, and the house is significant chiefly for its association with the 18th-century movement to Christianize Native Americans. The Hawleys occupied the house until Gideon's death in 1807; it was moved back from the road during a widening project around 1920.
