Dexter Grist Mill Artesian Well - Herring Run

Sandwich · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Town Hall Square Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Comprising about 40 acres around Sandwich's town center, this district marks the site of the first settlement on Cape Cod, established in 1637 and incorporated in 1639. The community kept its agricultural character until 1825, when the Sandwich Glass Works transformed it into one of New England's earliest industrialized villages, a prosperity that lasted until the factory closed in 1888. The visual core is formed by the Greek Revival Town Hall (1834), the reconstructed Dexter Grist Mill, and Shawme Pond, surrounded by nine surviving 17th-century and fourteen 18th-century buildings alongside 19th-century houses. The district is significant as an almost intact early 19th-century village whose buildings from three centuries rest comfortably side by side.
