The Sandwich Civil War Monument stands beside the town hall in a green known as Eaton Square. Although a committee had discussed honoring the town's Civil War dead as early as 1867, no memorial was built until 1911, when Brockton businessman William Eaton donated the roughly thirty-foot monument to the town. At its rain-soaked dedication, Boston mayor John F. 'Honey Fitz' Fitzgerald, grandfather of President John F. Kennedy, delivered an address; the town had sent nearly three hundred men to the war, of whom several dozen died.
