The Story
The Canary/Hartnett House at the corner of Stevens and Winter Streets in Hyannis is a well-preserved, vernacular Greek Revival cottage built around 1860, complete with a period shingled barn. A one-and-a-half story structure with a gable roof and off-center entry, it retains Federal-period touches such as flared lintels over 2/1 sash windows. The house is significant for its ties to the growth of Hyannis's Irish community, which settled the area in large numbers after the potato famine, many of them drawn by work building the Cape Cod Branch Railroad. It was owned by Mrs. Canary by 1880 and by J. Hartnett in 1907.
