No grades, no required courses, and a self-designed education: Hampshire opened in 1970 as an experiment, and it still hosts the Eric Carle Museum and a rare Living Building.
Every campus tells one story to visitors and another to itself. This walk covers both. Four stops over 1.2 miles, about 55 minutes of walking. The story for each stop plays as you arrive, so nothing has to be looked up and nobody has to be followed.
Amherst has five MassRoam tours and no two cover the same ground. It works as well at eight in the morning as it does at dusk. Stop for coffee, pick it back up.
