Young Men's Hebrew Building

Holyoke · Hampden County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the North High Street Historic District (Boundary Increase), listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This boundary increase extends Holyoke's North High Street Historic District southward along three blocks of High Street between Dwight and Essex Streets, anchored by the towering granite City Hall and occupying a central position downtown. The added area was an important retail and banking center between about 1880 and 1930, during Holyoke's peak prosperity, and its nearly continuous row of commercial buildings displays Romanesque Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Renaissance Revival styles in cast stone, brick, and terracotta. Together with the older Italianate and French Second Empire buildings of the original district to the north, it forms a sequence documenting Holyoke's commercial architectural development.
