Winchester Square Fire Station

Centered on State Street and Wilbraham Road, this Springfield district holds the largest surviving group of turn-of-the-century industrial buildings in the city and is significant for its role in American transportation history. It was home to the Indian Motocycle Company, organized in 1901 as the first firm to manufacture gasoline-engine motorcycles on a commercial scale in the United States, and to the Knox Company, a pioneering automobile and truck maker credited with helping develop the modern tractor-trailer. The complex of factory and commercial structures, several designed by local architect Francis R. Richmond, documents the neighborhood's rapid development into a major manufacturing center after the 1870s.
