The Story
The Valentine School, originally the Grape Street School, was built in 1898-1899 as a two-story Renaissance Revival building of red brick and sandstone designed by prominent Holyoke architect George P.D. Alderman. Its symmetrical facade features a rusticated arched entrance with a Palladian window above, strongly differentiated stories, and original oak woodwork inside; it was renamed in 1908 to honor former principal William Valentine. The city's finest example of the style, it embodies the civic spirit of Chicopee's late-19th-century growth and meets Criteria A, B, and C.

George P. B. Alderman, a Holyoke architect with a regional practice, gave Chicopee a school that borrows the language of an Italian palazzo: a rusticated ground floor banded with brick corbelling, second-floor windows under sandstone arches, a Palladian window over the recessed arched entrance, and a metal cornice carried on scrolled modillions. A tunnel once connected it to the Robinson Public School on the same lot, demolished in the 1950s. It taught Chicopee children until the 1980s and has since been converted to apartments. Listed on the National Register in 1983, it was also taken into the Springfield Street Historic District in 1991.
