U. S. Post Office - Palmer Main Branch

The United States Post Office in Palmer, at Park and Central Streets, is a Neo-Classical building designed in April 1931 by the U.S. Treasury Department's Architectural Division under Louis A. Simon and James A. Wetmore, and completed in May 1932. The two-story steel-frame structure is faced in buff-colored brick with limestone trim and features a recessed portico of eight Ionic limestone columns reached by granite steps, flanked by original cast-copper Art Deco lampposts. Built at a cost of about $75,945 during the Depression, when the federal government sought to reach out to local communities, it is significant as a fine example of Neo-Classical design and a product of the Treasury Department.
