The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Dwight Manufacturing Company Housing District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Built largely in the 1830s and 1840s in Chicopee Center, once known as Cabotville, this district preserves a rare surviving group of brick textile-mill workers' housing from one of western Massachusetts' most important early industrial centers. Following the Lowell model and financed by Boston investors such as Edmund Dwight, the Dwight Manufacturing Company and affiliated firms housed their recruited female operatives in supervised corporate boarding houses, later renting the dwellings to immigrant mill families. The buildings, chiefly the work of builder Charles McClallan, range from large multistory Greek Revival brick boarding houses with fine brickwork to smaller single-family units and a later Stick Style block. The district is significant as an example of a planned nineteenth-century industrial community and of factory-owner paternalism toward workers.
