This building is part of the Springfield Armory, the primary manufacturer of United States military firearms from 1777 until its closing in 1968 and the nation's first federal armory. Established after George Washington approved the site during the Revolution, it was the target of Daniel Shays' rebels in 1787 and became a cradle of industrial innovation, pioneering interchangeable parts and assembly-line mass production that helped arm Union forces during the Civil War. In 1919 John Garand arrived at Springfield to develop the semi-automatic rifle that became the M1 Garand, of which the armory eventually produced more than 4.5 million. The core of the site is now the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, home to one of the world's largest collections of historic American firearms.
