History

This is the last nineteenth-century barn standing in Agawam, roughly 51 by 41 feet with a 30-foot gable, sided in vertical tongue-and-groove boards over post-and-beam framing three stories deep. Its double-ramp form — concrete ramps to big doors at both gable ends — is rare in the Connecticut River valley, where bank barns and single-ramp barns dominate, and it is the only known example in town. Absentee owners' tenants probably built it. River flooding in 1938 ended private farming here; the county then ran the land as Hampden County's jail farm, worked by inmates from the Springfield York Street jail, until the late 1980s. It now sits in School Street Park, and was listed on the National Register in 2012.
