Sanford Whip Company

The Westfield Whip Manufacturing Company building at 360 Elm Street in Westfield is a red-brick factory built between 1887 and 1892, a three-and-a-half-story main block with limestone trim, segmental-arched windows, and an original elevator shaft, later extended with single-story rear additions. Westfield, known since about 1801 as the Whip City of the World, once had more than sixty whip enterprises, and this factory is the sole survivor still in operation. It is significant for its long association with an industry that dominated the world manufacture of carriage and harness-racing whips, and for its intact late-19th-century industrial construction and its rare surviving in-situ whip-making machinery. It meets Criteria A and C at the local level.
