Prospect Hill School

The Prospect Hill School is a two-and-a-half-story red brick Colonial Revival schoolhouse with rough-cut sandstone trim, erected in 1897 and expanded in 1919 in a residential neighborhood of Westfield. It was listed for its association with early modern educational reform, reflecting the city's shift from scattered one- and two-room wooden district schools to a modern system of graded regional elementary schools in substantial masonry buildings. The school served as a focal point for the Prospect Hill neighborhood, one of Westfield's earliest settled areas, whose successive Irish, Italian, and Polish immigrant families sent their children here. It was designed by local architects Augustus W. Holton and Malcolm B. Harding, who specialized in institutional buildings and designed several of Westfield's schools.
