The Story

A contributing property in the North Chester Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Set on the middle branch of the Westfield River in the foothills of the Berkshires, this is an excellent example of a late-18th- and 19th-century rural New England agricultural and mill village. The narrow valley plain drew farmers, while the river powered the saw and grist mills that anchored the community, later joined by a cotton mill and tannery. Eclipsed once the railroad routed through another Chester village, North Chester survived as a farm and summer-home community, and its buildings, dating from about 1770 to the early 1900s, reflect the persistence of a few vernacular forms in an isolated, economically modest setting.
