The Story
The Route 66 Diner (originally the New Bay Diner Restaurant) at 950 Bay Street in Springfield is a stainless-steel diner manufactured in 1957 as unit #532 by Mountain View Diners of Signac, New Jersey, and shipped to the site the same year. Seven bays wide with red horizontal bands, a rounded hipped roof, and neon rooftop signage, it retains its original terrazzo floors, back-bar sunburst panels, and manufacturer's tag. It is Springfield's last diner and one of only about six surviving Mountain View diners in Massachusetts, reportedly the second-to-last built before the company closed in 1957.
