Predominantly two-story wood-frame commercial and residential buildings are punctuated by dominant public structures, Memorial Hall and the Universalist Church, built of locally quarried Monson granite. The center's growth followed a shift in the town's civic focus driven by its nineteenth-century granite, straw-goods and textile industries, and it reflects that surge in prosperity as well as the later transition toward a modern suburb.
