The Story
The Mills-Stebbins Villa at 3 Crescent Hill, Springfield, is a brick Italian Villa-style residence built in 1849-1851 from designs by architect Henry A. Sykes of Suffield, Connecticut. It features a prominent campanile-like tower, highly asymmetrical picturesque massing, and finely carved interior detailing. It is the oldest and finest example of the Italian Villa style in Springfield and was described by architectural historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock as 'one of the finest nineteenth century houses in America.' Its first owner was prominent attorney and State Treasurer John Mills, followed by banker and merchant John B. Stebbins.

History
Springfield attorney John Mills had this Italian villa built between 1849 and 1851 to designs by Henry A. Sykes, who anchored it with a square tower echoing an Italian Renaissance campanile; it is usually called Sykes's finest work. Mills died in 1861 and the house passed to John Stebbins, a banker, real estate developer and local politician. Badly run down by the mid-twentieth century, it was rehabilitated in the early 1970s and added to the National Register in October 1973. It stands within the Ames Hill/Crescent Hill district.
