Lincoln Apartment House

A contributing property in the Belle and Franklin Streets Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Built largely between 1914 and 1916, this Springfield district captures the burst of apartment-house construction that swept the city's North End early in the 20th century. Developer William Lay laid out a cohesive group of Classical Revival blocks--brick four-story buildings on Belle Street and stucco-covered frame three-story flats on Franklin Street--each named for a U.S. president and unified in scale, materials, and detail. A surviving mid-19th-century Italianate residence anchors the district's western edge, marking the neighborhood's transition from stylish single-family estates to densely set flats served by new streetcar lines. It is significant for its community-planning and architectural character at the local level.
