Leonard, Capt. Charles House

The Captain Charles Leonard House at 663 Main Street in Agawam is a hip-roofed clapboard house built in 1805, two rooms wide and two deep with a central hall, believed to have been designed by architect Asher Benjamin. Its elaborately treated facade centers on a projecting deep roof pediment with returns and a fan window, supported by Tuscan columns, with a fanlight door flanked by Doric pilasters and sidelights and a tall Palladian window centered above, lighting the second-floor stair landing. A notable interior feature is the tap room running the width of the house, with vertical wainscot and Dutch doors used to serve the gentry on the parlor side and the hostlers on the kitchen side. Built for Captain Charles Leonard, a local militia member and leading citizen known as 'the farmer who went to Harvard,' who operated the house as an inn until his death, it is significant as the most elaborate pre-1850 architectural work in Agawam. It now serves as the town's community and museum house and is listed on the National Register for its architecture.
