Kenwyn Apartments

The Kenwyn Apartments at 6 Kenwood Park and 413-415 Belmont Avenue in Springfield is a detached four-story masonry apartment building erected in 1916 to the designs of the William H. Carpenter Co. Built of brick faced with stucco, it is the only known local example of the Spanish Mission revival style applied to a large multi-family dwelling, featuring arched entranceways, barrel-tiled overhangs, Spanish baroque parapets, a rounded corner bay, and paired 12/1 wood sash windows, with oak-paneled foyers and stairwells and corner units containing small oak-paneled libraries with french doors. The twenty-eight-unit block reflects the boom in apartment construction that flourished in Springfield in the first quarter of the 20th century as the traditional City of Homes developed a prosperous middle class, and it attracted respectable tenants such as salesmen, widows, single career women, and young professionals. After decades of decline and vacancy it was slated for rehabilitation as affordable housing. It meets National Register criteria A and C for architecture and community planning and development.
