The Story

A contributing property in the Chester Factory Village Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. A nucleated cluster of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings in the hills of western Massachusetts, this village began as a small milling and tanning center between 1752 and 1840, sited where a local road crossed the old Massachusetts Turnpike (now roughly Route 20). The arrival of the Western Railroad between Boston and Albany in 1838 spurred further growth, and the district developed through the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the local granite industry. It retains a high degree of integrity and includes ambitious late-Victorian residences alongside commercial and industrial landmarks such as the 1892 Chester Granite Company office.
