The arrival of the Western Railroad between Boston and Albany in 1838 spurred further growth, and the district developed through the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the local granite industry. It retains a high degree of integrity and includes ambitious late-Victorian residences alongside commercial and industrial landmarks such as the 1892 Chester Granite Company office.
