Longmeadow · Hampden County

The roadside stories worth pulling over for.

The Story

A contributing property in the Longmeadow Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Centered on a long, narrow village green typical of Connecticut River Valley towns, this district forms the historic core of Longmeadow, a community reclaimed from sandy lowland beginning in 1703 after flooding drove settlers up from the river meadows. The green, cleared of its cottage industries and returned to open turf in an early landscape restoration around 1898, is ringed by a concentration of buildings spanning the early 18th through the 20th centuries, including colonial and Georgian houses, Federal and Italianate dwellings, a church, town hall, library, and community house. As an affluent residential suburb of Springfield, the town preserved much of its early architecture. Significance areas include architecture, community planning, commerce, education, settlement, and military and industrial history.
