Gibbs, Jarvis House

A contributing property in the Russell Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Set on the floodplain of the Westfield River in the foothills of the Green Mountains, this small western Massachusetts village is significant as a mid-19th-century riverside railroad town whose growth was driven by transportation and sustained by the papermaking industry. The laying out of a toll road in 1800 drew the town's civic and church functions to the riverside village, and the arrival of the railroad in 1838 spurred the industrial development that carried its economy into the 20th century. Its modest, simply detailed buildings, ranging from Greek Revival through the bungalow style, form a coherent community of mill and railroad workers' residences that has changed little over time.
