First Church Common

A contributing property in the Ludlow Center Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. A well-preserved rural village at the geographical center of Ludlow, chosen in the town's early years as the site of its first meetinghouse and burial ground. Though it began as the town center, the rise of industrial activity in the early 19th century shifted Ludlow's focus southward, leaving the center bypassed by later development and preserving its rural character. Set within isolating wetlands and uplands, the district's roughly two dozen acres contain modest white-clapboarded buildings dating from 1783 onward that represent vernacular Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate interpretations, including the surviving 1783-84 First Meeting House; its period of significance runs from 1783 to 1912.
