Field, Caleb House

The broad, tree-lined northern stretch of Longmeadow Street, set high on a river terrace, reflects the conscious planning of residents and developers who sought an alternative to the congestion and social problems of nearby Springfield. Though the community's roots reach to a 1645 river-meadow settlement and a 1703 relocation to the terrace that established the street's remarkable 330-foot width, this district is characterized by a scattering of older farmhouses and concentrations of early 20th-century suburban development. The 1890s creation of Forest Park to the north and a streetcar line introduced in 1896 made it a desirable commuter suburb, and deed restrictions during the conversion of farm lots sought to shape a favorable residential environment.
