History

This marker at Federal Square in Springfield recalls Shays' Rebellion, an armed uprising of debt-ridden farmers in 1786-87 led by Revolutionary War veteran Daniel Shays. In January 1787 the rebels marched on the federal arsenal at Springfield, where militia repelled them. The revolt alarmed national leaders and helped spur the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
