The Story
The Joseph Dewey House in Westfield is a two-and-a-half-story wood-frame Georgian residence built around 1735, and is among Westfield's oldest surviving Georgian homes. It displays Georgian motifs including a denticulated cornice and pediments over the central entry, and it is attributed to Joseph Dewey (1684-1757) of the prominent Dewey family, among Westfield's earliest settlers, in whose family the house remained for its first hundred years. It is significant under Criterion A for its role in the history of the Dewey family and under Criterion C as an example of 18th-century architecture; it was relocated to its present site in 1973.
