The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the McKnight District (Boundary Increase), listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This boundary increase enlarges Springfield's McKnight district, the city's largest late-19th- and early-20th-century middle-class residential neighborhood, whose greatest period of growth ran from about 1880 to the end of World War I. Laid out on regularly platted lots within a tightly defined area, it was developed largely by brothers John and William McKnight, who left the dry-goods business to concentrate on real estate and imposed compatible standards on the lots they sold. The 885-property district is architecturally significant for its well-preserved single- and two-family residences, which display the full range of popular Victorian styles including Stick, Queen Anne, Shingle, and Tudor, together with a school, park, churches, and a few commercial buildings that make the neighborhood virtually self-contained.
