History

Opened in 1926 in Springfield's Six Corners neighborhood, this Collegiate Gothic brick-and-stone school was named for Elias Brookings, a Maine-born Civil War veteran who had been principal of the Central Street School. The June 2011 tornado that cut across Springfield tore a hole in the roof and blew out windows, and the water damage that followed made the building unusable; students moved to modular classrooms and then to a new school in 2015. The shell was rehabilitated as the 42-unit Brookings Apartments and listed on the National Register in 2023.
