History

Reading in the village began with a Social Library organized in 1873, and the collection moved among borrowed quarters for forty years before this fieldstone building opened on Woods Hole Road in 1913. Its rough stone walls answer the summer-colony taste of the scientific village that had grown up around the Marine Biological Laboratory. An addition in 1952 doubled the original floor area, and further expansions followed; the library remains an independent association library serving Woods Hole.
