Wood End Light House

Wood End Light Lookout Station sits on the southerly coastline of the arm of Cape Cod in Provincetown, on several acres of open sand and dunes about a mile and a half across the harbor from the town. The nomination covers the surviving 1873 tower and 1896 oil house; the tower is a square white-painted brick structure about 38 feet tall with a ten-sided lens room, identical to its sister tower at nearby Long Point Light. The government acquired the land in 1864 and first put up a pyramidal tower before erecting the present brick tower in 1873, and more than fifty ships were wrecked along this shore in 1875; the keeper's dwelling and other outbuildings, added in 1896, were razed in 1961 when the light was automated, and it was converted to solar power in 1981. Still an active aid to navigation, Wood End Light retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and, together with Long Point Light as the only extant pair of lights still in operation, was listed under the Lighthouses of Massachusetts thematic group, meeting National Register Criteria A and C at the state level.
