Winslow, Nathan and Lurana Freeman House (BRE.69)

Brewster · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Stony Brook--Factory Village Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This district in Brewster is a distinctive industrial village that rose to regional prominence between the late 17th and mid-19th centuries, owing its status to a prime location where the Old King's Highway crossed Stony Brook, one of the region's strongest water privileges and the site of an unusually rich herring run. Its history epitomizes the small-scale, water-powered industry that once flourished on Cape Cod, though Factory Village was larger and more diverse than most such villages before declining as it lost out to better-capitalized industries elsewhere. The area also represents one of Barnstable County's earliest conscious acts of historic preservation, with the Old Grist Mill and adjacent lands acquired for a museum in 1940, helping it survive as the region's best-preserved historic industrial village. Its period of significance broadly extends from about 1660 to 1948 (Criteria A and C).
