Wing's Neck Light

Bourne · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

Wing's Neck Light sits at the end of Wing's Neck, a treeless, breakwater-protected peninsula in the Pocasset section of Bourne on the east side of Buzzards Bay. It originally guarded the eastern approach to Sandwich Harbor and the Monument River, where commerce flowed past from the port of Wareham and the Pocasset iron foundry, and it later marked an approach to the Cape Cod Canal, which opened in 1914. The station consists of an 1889 three-story octagonal wood-frame tower sheathed in white shingles and joined by a covered walkway to an 1889 keeper's dwelling, together with an 1849 stone oil house and an 1870s keeper's house that were floated to the site from Ned Point in Mattapoisett. Now unmanned and inactive, it is listed as the only intact wooden tower attached by a covered walkway to a period keeper's house, and it retains several unusual original features including a finely built staircase and rare copper venting.
