The Story
The Josiah B. Whitman House at 210 Maple Street in West Barnstable is a two-story French Second Empire dwelling built around 1860 on Jones Mill Pond, with a square main block under a mansard roof and a wing extending to the southwest. Ornate pediments and brackets accent the entry, bay window, and porch roofs in the classic Second Empire manner. Though relatively simple in its detailing, the house represents a clearer understanding of the mansard style than most others in the town, and it takes its name from owner Josiah B. Whitman, who held the property from 1874.
