The Story
The Provincetown Main Post Office at 217 Commercial Street is a Georgian-style brick building constructed in 1932, with a two-story central core flanked by one-story wings, a three-bay arched loggia entrance, fanlight transoms, quoined corners, and a windowed cupola. It was designed under Acting Supervising Architect James A. Wetmore during the Depression, when Treasury architects applied distinctive lobby and facade treatments to standardized plans to provide construction work and express the strength and stability of the federal government. Provincetown's first federal building other than its lighthouses, it stands on the waterfront as a major stabilizing element on Commercial Street.

History
The Provincetown Post Office at 217 Commercial Street occupies a 2.5-story brick building erected in 1930. Its main facade features a loggia-style arcade of three arches leading to a recessed entrance, with large second-story windows, an oculus in the gable, dentil moulding, and a crowning cupola. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
