Tobey, Charles House

The Josiah Tobey House is a two-and-a-half-story Greek Revival, L-plan frame dwelling built in 1854, distinguished by a fluted-column, dentil-trimmed front porch and wide entablatures with corner pilasters, and considered one of the most stylish Greek Revival houses in Falmouth. Built for Josiah Tobey and his wife Sarah Lewis on land historically known as Lewis Neck in East Falmouth, it is closely tied to the area's shifting agriculture, from sheep raising to cranberry and strawberry production. Later owned by cranberry manager John Crocker, it served for about 70 years as the rectory of St. Anthony's Church, a Portuguese national parish reflecting the Azorean and Cape Verdean immigrants who came to harvest cranberries and grow strawberries. Threatened with demolition, the house was moved in one piece in 1991 to a hilltop at 67 Oxbow Road in Teaticket and converted to a two-family residence. It is significant for its association with East Falmouth's development and the Portuguese-American community, and as a rural example of the Greek Revival style.
