Tillinghast Cottage

A contributing property in the Craigville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Occupying a bluff overlooking Centerville Harbor and Nantucket Sound, this district preserves the core of a 19th-century Christian camp meeting colony founded in 1871-72, when the New England Convention of Christian Churches acquired the former Perry farm on what became Christian Hill. Laid out with grid and curvilinear streets and small lots around a triangular park and Tabernacle, it followed the pattern of earlier Methodist camp grounds while also resembling secular summer developments of the period. Its fanciful small-scale Carpenter Gothic cottages, along with the Tabernacle, an inn, store and post office, survive as a well-preserved collection of camp-meeting buildings; renamed Craigville in 1881, the colony evolved into a year-round conference and retreat center.
