History

This gingerbread-trimmed little building had three lives before it held books: it is said to have been moved to South Dennis around 1856 from a Yarmouth camp-meeting ground, then served as a dwelling and a cobbler's shop, and was at one point home to a local poetess. Its first owner was John Rose, recorded as the town's first Portuguese resident. It became the South Dennis Free Public Library in 1918 and remains one of four small village libraries scattered through Dennis - an unusual survival on a Cape where most towns consolidated long ago.
