History
Sacrament Rock in Barnstable commemorates the tradition that the town's first settlers, the congregation led by the Reverend John Lothrop, celebrated their first communion near this large glacial boulder in 1639. Local lore also holds that the community held its earliest town meeting at the rock, though, as with Plymouth Rock, no contemporary records confirm the claims. The boulder had broken apart over the centuries, and the pieces were reassembled with a commemorative plaque in 1916.
