History

Iyannough (also spelled Iyanough) was a young sachem of the Cummaquid band of the Wampanoag in the area of present-day Barnstable. In 1621 he aided Plymouth colonists searching for the lost boy John Billington and is remembered as a figure of early cooperation between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. The village of Hyannis and other local place names derive from his name.
