Port Royal House, The

The Port Royal House (Nickerson Homestead) at 606 Main Street in Chatham is a small but imposing two-story, wood-frame Tuscan Villa-style house built in 1863, with a flat roof, full-length front veranda with fluted Doric columns, and heavy horizontal trim, ornately carved paired brackets, and paneled pilasters. It was built for Captain Seth Eldridge, a Chatham sailing master who so admired a house he saw in Port Royal, Jamaica, that he procured its plans; the well-known Nickerson family, local merchants, has owned it since 1872. Remarkably intact, the house is significant as an excellent example of the Tuscan Villa style on Cape Cod and as a representation of Cape Cod's 19th-century maritime prosperity, meeting Criteria B and C.
