History

The Pauper's Cemetery, also called the South Street Cemetery, in Barnstable was established in 1737 as a burying ground for the town's poor. Like other town poor-farm and potter's-field burial grounds of colonial New England, its graves were often unmarked or marked only with fieldstones, and it stands as a reminder of how early towns provided for their indigent dead. It lies within a local historic district on South Street.
