Paine, Capt. Otis West Outhouse

Wellfleet · Barnstable County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

A contributing property in the Paine Hollow Road South Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This small Wellfleet district gathers seven 19th-century residences linked by the ties of the Paine family, who settled here near Blackfish Creek. Their modest, vernacular dwellings represent two locally important house forms, the 1-1/2-story side-gabled Cape Cod cottage and the later Greek Revival sidehall type, and reflect the working-class roots of a family engaged in both subsistence farming and, increasingly, the maritime trades that centered on the busy landing at Blackfish Creek. The district illustrates Wellfleet's broader shift from a community of fishing and small-scale agriculture toward a summer resort where maritime interests still mattered, and it holds archaeological potential for studying 19th-century coastal livelihoods.
