History
This marker commemorates the West Barnstable birthplace of James Otis Jr. (1725-1783), a lawyer and early leader of American opposition to British colonial policy. Otis argued against the writs of assistance in 1761 and is often credited with popularizing the principle that 'taxation without representation is tyranny.' John Adams cited Otis's arguments as a formative spark of the American Revolution.
